Pollyanna Blue are an alt-rock duo from Bristol, made up of Zoe Collins on Guitar/Vocals and Rich Earle on Bass/Vocals. The name was apparently inspired by a self help book called ‘Feel The Fear and Do it Anyway’, the book makes reference to something called a ‘Pollyanna’ which is a name given to someone who is overly optimistic despite the circumstances, the actual term itself was derived from the 1913 novel of the same name, by Eleanor H. Porter, which features a young orphan who embodies that same exuberant and positive outlook. The pair talked about how their ethos as a band is about being positive in spite of what difficulties life throws at you. Anyway, Pollyanna Blue’s single ‘Haunted’ was released on 24th October 2022.
‘Haunted’ breaks open with a powerful string driven beat, that explodes as it progresses, just a fusion of high energy and intensity, that flows seamlessly into the strong vocals, you really get carried away with this track, the alternating highs and lows, the power behind everything, it’s honestly really impressive, the type of music that leaves you feeling energised. I liked the vocal counterpoints between the two singers, very different styles, and range, sometimes especially with a duo they can sound too similar and it all becomes a bit homogenous but Zoe and Rich, have equally impressive but more importantly very distinct voices. Getting back on topic though, this track has some real heat to it, and as regular readers will know, I like a song that dominates, just kinda fills the space, and this track does that in spades. I’ll be keeping an eye out for Pollyanna Blue in the future.
