Greggs is a British institution, a high street bakery chain, with over 2000 locations across the country, selling a wide range of products including Sausage rolls, bakes, pies and various sweets and confections.
Today I will be reviewing the Vegan Sausage, Bean & Cheeze Melt from Greggs, which contains Quorn Vegan Sausage (made from fungal mycoprotein), Violife’s dairy-free cheese and Baked Beans.
Vegan Sausage, Bean & Cheeze Melt
So full disclosure, I don’t usually get even the original Sausage, Bean and Cheese melt, it’s something I’ll grab on occasion but to be honest I’m far more partial to either the Sausage Roll or the Steak Bake, of which I’ve tried and reviewed the Vegan version of both, and you can check those out here and here respectively. That’s not to say I don’t like the melt, it’s always savoury and enjoyable, and doesn’t decline much when cold. But I have less of a baseline for how the original version tastes than I did with the Sausage Roll or Steak Bake so this review might be a little different.
Okay, so first off the pastry was lovely, and the meat substitute easily passes the comparison test as I don’t think I could accurately tell the difference. Likewise the Vegan cheese, or Cheeze as they have to render it is also very good, very creamy and it melted well with the beans and the sausage to create a thick hearty sauce. I already knew I was going to like the Cheeze though, and I talked about that in more detail in my review of Greggs Vegan Ham and Cheeze Baguette, which you can check out here. I think both the sausage and the Cheeze are both great, they not only simulate their non-vegan counterparts perfectly in my opinion, but also taste great, but what really ties this together are the baked beans, the tomato sauce blending and mixing with the various elements to create a rich and very tasty snack.
