Willie Spence is an American musician, I think I first saw him when one of his videos went viral on Facebook, it was him alongside some other youngsters, performing this specific cover of Diamonds by Rihanna. It wasn’t as polished as his other performances, or even his other renditions of this specific track but I piqued my interest, as I was captivated by his voice. He really shot into public view however after appearing on season 19 of American Idol, where he made it all the way through to the end, taking 2nd place, behind Chayce Beckham who ultimately won. But now that we are done with that little bit of cross promotion, I’ll just finish by saying that today I will be reviewing Willie Spence’s cover of Diamonds by Rihanna, which was released to YouTube on March 10th 2018.
‘Diamonds (Rihanna Cover)’ opens strongly, Willie’s voice is deep and powerful, with a weight and vitality to it, you can feel the passion in every note. While I deeply respect Rihanna as an artist, I cannot help but think that Willie just absolutely owns this song. I loved the subtle electronic beat, supporting and blending with Willie’s vocals, but never taking away from the genuinely draw dropping performance he delivers. Seriously, he hits the highs, conquers the lows, and just does an amazing job of tackling this track. I talked about this in my review of Gallows by Shelby Merry, when you spend most days listening to music, it can sometimes rob some of the magic from it, it becomes a job, almost mechanical but then you hear a song like this, or a performer like this, who just has so much passion and sincerity and talent and you have to take a step back because you just heard, honest and real music.
