YouTube Premium

Just a quick disclaimer that this is not an advertisement and I am in no way affiliated with or compensated by Google.

I’ve been on a spell lately of writing about various cool services and businesses that I feel you should check out, and while Google and it’s various services including Premium probably don’t need any more visibility due to their already massive brand recognition and market saturation I still felt like I wanted to weigh in with my thoughts.

So I have used AdBlock and other similar services to cut down on ads I see while browsing the internet, so I’m not going to recommend Premium purely just because it gets rid of ads, especially since I feel you should also use and support AdBlock which totally deserves some attention too but I will say that not having to worry about ads while using YouTube has made using the service significantly easier.

In addition to ad free content, you have the option to download videos to watch when you are offline or otherwise need them. Plus they have a nifty feature called Smart Downloads, which means that when you’re connected to Wi-Fi it’ll automatically download 10 recommended videos and refresh them weekly, which means you’ll always have something to watch.

You also get access to YouTube Music, which allows you access to a wide host of music, completely ad-free, with the option to download for offline use, or while screen locked.

That leads me on to perhaps the best feature of the service, you can finally have your videos or music playing in the background. We’ve been using the service on and off for about a year or so and during the periods where we haven’t had Premium it’s been a significant inconvenience to not be able to have videos playing in the background while browsing on my phone. I’ve found the feature to be so useful that I actually cancelled my Spotify subscription as I could now listen to all the music I would ever want on YouTube.

It’s truly a fantastic service overall, and it’s a fairly reasonable price for what you get, the standard Premium service is £11.99 per month, but they also offer a family plan which costs £17.99 per month and allows you to add up to five other members to the account to get the same awesome features. Or if you’re a student you are eligible for the student plan which costs £6.99 (you just need to verify your status as a student).

If you want to try it out for yourself, you can get a two month free trial with the standard plan, a one month free trial with the family plan or a month one free trial with the student plan by clicking here
