Single Review: Megan Thee Stallion – Thot Shit

Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, more commonly known as Megan Thee Stallion is an American rapper and songwriter, from Houston, Texas. She sometimes goes by other names, specifically ‘Tina Snow’ or ‘Hot Girl Meg’ with both of these alter egos representing different aspects of Megan’s personality which she expresses through her music. She first gained attention when her freestyling videos went viral on social media. She has since been featured in tracks alongside other prominent female artists, for example ‘Savage Remix’ with Beyonce, ‘WAP’ with Cardi B, and ‘34+35 Remix’ with Ariana Grande (and Doja Cat). She became the second female rapper to win the Grammy award for best new artist, after Lauryn Hill in 1999.

In addition to releasing several chart toppers, and receiving numerous accolades such as the grammy mentioned earlier, she also managed to graduate from Texas Southern University with a bachelor’s degree in health administration in 2021. What inspired me to finally review Stallion’s music was that apparently the program director for TSU’s health administration said that since Megan Thee Stallion graduated they’ve had a notable influx of former drop-outs returning to finish their degrees. This shows that not only is Megan inspiring and influencing people with her music, but also with her actions, and her commitment to her education.

Anyway, today I will be reviewing her single ‘Thot Shit’ which was released on June 11th 2021 and is part of her compilation album Something for Thee Hotties, which was released on October 29th 2021 and is a ‘thank you’ gift to Megan’s fanbase.

‘Thot Shit’ kicks off fast, Megan Thee Stallions vocal talents are impressive, she delivers the lines with clarity and speed, keeping a driving energy throughout the full track. It has a solid hook that sticks in your head, and you just get caught up in the relentless rhythm of the rapping. I will say, I was surprised by how subtle any instrumental backing was, just some light percussive beats which adds to the power and impact of the lines but fundamentally this is a track that either thrives or fails depending upon the quality of the vocals and Megan Thee Stallion’s voice is powerful, and she has a confidence and intensity that is well deserved and really makes this track all that it can be. Another surprise, considering the title, I was expecting something more flighty and upbeat, but this had a heavier note which worked really well for it.

So that’s what I thought of Megan Thee Stallion’s single ‘Thot Shit’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, support the artist by visiting her website and by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
