Caleb Hyles is a singer/songwriter and filmmaker from Montgomery, Alabama and I discovered him on YouTube through listening to JonTron’s cover of ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry of all things, a track I also reviewed and you can check out here if you are interested. I fell in love with Caleb’s voice and instantly became a fan. Today I’ll be reviewing his cover of ‘Other Friends (from Steven Universe)’.

‘Other Friends (Steven Universe Cover)’ was the first track I ever heard by Caleb Hyles, and full disclosure I hadn’t seen (and still haven’t seen) the Steven Universe movie. I fully intend to but haven’t got around to it yet. I’m not bothered about spoilers though and to be honest this cover only made me want to see the movie more so Rebecca Sugar and Cartoon Network might wanna hire him for promotion cause Caleb’s voice alone got me interested in seeing the movie. Anyway, aside from all that background info, what I really like about this other than the male vocals coupled with his theatre ready voice adding a lot to the performance was that he really belted it out, I love intensity in music, when you can really feel the performer feeling the track and you get that from Caleb during this track. I listen to the original and to be honest even though it’s great it doesn’t hold a candle to this version which just blew me away. Also it’s interesting that even though he was covering a song sung originally by a manic, shapeshifting, alien that he delivered the lines with as much, if not more energy than the original. He also captured the feel, the betrayal and hurt of the character and portrayed it brilliantly.

So that’s what I thought of Caleb Hyles’s cover of ‘Other Friends (from Steven Universe)’ and if you want to check that out you can head on over to YouTube. Please consider supporting Caleb on Patreon so he can continue to make content. You should also check out his website, and you can keep up to date with Caleb by following him on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
