Single Review: Melisa Kelly & The Smokin’ Crows – I Won’t Give Up On You

Melisa Kelly and The Smokin’ Crows - I Won’t Give Up On You Artwork

Melisa Kelly and the Smokin’ Crows are a soul/blues band based in Glasgow, they are currently made up of the titular Melisa Kelly on Rhythm Guitar and Vocals, Kyle Hood on Lead Guitar, Dean Darkie on keyboard, Kieran Savage on Bass and Toni McVey on Drums. Today I will be reviewing a song of theirs that I’ve had waiting for a while, but have been really excited to review, namely their track ‘I won’t Give up on You’ which is off their 2018 release ‘Devil’s Luck’.

‘I Won’t Give Up On You’ opens with some light but atmospheric percussion that’s very quickly joined by a variety of other sounds that have a slow, lingering feel, almost a bit like a funeral dirge, but one you wouldn’t mind listening to. The whole track has this morbid energy to it and it really works. Unrelated to that Melisa’s voice is just incredible, it’s powerful, sultry and draws you in from the first moment, until the last. I tend to listen to these tracks once or twice when I first receive them and then a few times while I’m actually typing up the review, but this one I just kept listening to on repeat. Also not sure if this is a compliment, although it’s certainly intended as one, but I could totally hear this as the title score for an upcoming James Bond movie, it just has that balance of atmosphere, energy and gravitas that suits the franchise well.

So that’s what I thought of Melisa Kelly & The Smokin’ Crows single ‘I Won’t Give Up On You’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. Make sure and support the band by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
