*This list was original posted on 01/01/2019, updated on 08/07/2019 and updated again on 14/12/2019 to include new entries which have made it onto my Top 10 List.
Here’s another Top 10, this one breaks down my favourite One-offs from Dan era Game Grumps. If you want to check out my Top 10 Dan era extended playthroughs then click here and if you want to check out my favourite Jon era One-offs and Extended Playthroughs then click here and here respectively. I also made a Top 10 for my favourite Game Grumps moments which you can check out here.
While I’m at it, if you are a fan of Game Grumps, I would strongly recommend that you check out KittyKatGaming, a channel ran by Suzy Berhow (also known as Mortem3r) who is an artist, animator, model, jeweller, voice actor, taxidermist, entrepreneur and member of the Game Grumps, as well as being the wife of Arin Hanson (also known as Egoraptor). If you like the channel then maybe you might like to check out my Top 10 KittyKatGaming One-offs and Extended Playthroughs which you can check out here and here respectively.
Okay, now let me actually introduce you to the Game Grumps before we move onto the Top 10 list. Game Grumps are a Let’s Play channel which was established in July 2012 by Co-hosts and founders Arin Hanson (also known as Egoraptor) and Jon Jafari (also known as JonTron) who on the show, also called ‘Game Grumps‘ play the characters of ‘Grump’ and ‘Not So Grump’ respectively.
While I am talking about Jon, if you are a fan then feel free to check out my Top 10 JonTron Episodes list by clicking here.
Arin and Jon ran the channel together, along with their editor Barry Kramer (also known as razzadoop) until Jon left in June 2013 to focus on his own channel, JonTronShow. Following Jon’s departure from the channel he was replaced by American musician, Internet personality, singer-songwriter, comedian, and actor Dan Avidan (also known as Danny Sexbang) who took over his role as ‘Not So Grump’.
Interestingly enough, Dan had initially been planned to be the co-host of another show on the Game Grumps channel, called Steam Train, alongside Ross O’Donovan (also known as RubberRoss, RubberNinja or CondomRoss) an Australian animator, voice actor, and Internet personality. However due to Jon’s sudden withdrawal from the show, and because Arin had apparently said that Danny would have always been his second choice for a co-host of Game Grumps if Jon were unavailable he ended up taking the co-host role on both shows. Another interesting tidbit regarding Dan joining the channel is that his first appearance on Game Grumps in the video(s) Ode to Jon / Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!: Around the World – PART 1 went up on the same day as his first appearance on Steam Train in the video Hotline Miami: Who’s Calling? – PART 1 (which was actually recorded several months prior) with both being uploaded to the Game Grumps channel on the 25th June 2013. Lastly, before we move onto the actual list you’re here for, if you like Steam Train and would like to check out my Top 10 Steam Train One-offs and Extended Playthroughs then you can click here and here respectively. So there we have it, now onto the Top 10 Game Grumps One-Offs (Danny Era).
1. Mickey Mousecapade
A holdover from the original version of this list, and a strong fan favourite, I think this was probably one of the first clips/episodes I saw from Game Grumps and I think what hooked me, other than all the different types of poop that Arin could list obviously, was that it showed without really trying the strong friendship between Arin and Dan, as well as how their sense of humour complimented one another. Anyway, this episode starts with Arin doing an impression of a ‘stereotypical’ over the top video gamer reviewer, he ends up spewing a bunch of nonsensical and misogynistic things as Dan tries to progress throughout the levels.
2. Dennis the Menace
An episode that is just full of memorable moments, it was so close to taking the top slot that I considered making them joint first, but in the end I kinda rolled the dice and picked which one of them got to go ahead, and which was relegated to second place. Anyway, this video is hilarious, and I’ve probably watched it a hundred times, also whether you are familiar with this video or not I strongly suggest you check out the impromptu rap song about Mr. Wilson which you can check out about 14 minutes and 30 seconds into the video. Another personal highlight, is Dan shouting that fish are impervious to time as the game glitches out during the pause menu, and everything freezes with the exception of the various fish swimming in tanks. This is another video that really seems like two friends playing a game, with us kind of back seat or back couch gaming, instead of watching professionals playing like you might get with other Let’s Play channels.
3. Ice Age 2 The Meltdown
Is an episode that I affectionately call ‘The One with all the Lies’, in the episode Arin and Dan are basically so bored with the actual plot of the game and the pre-rendered cutscenes that they spend almost no time playing the actual game itself, instead they begin making up a series of vaguely interconnected facts, requests for gratuitous wikipedia graffiti and anecdotes about the life of Leonardo Da Vinci, including that he is a T-Rex who invented Facebook, sells hats and played Bass for Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock.
4. The Berenstain Bears On Their Own And You On Your Own
A saccharine little game for the Philips CD-i which the Grumps technically played, although they more just watched the events unfold and screamed take the shot, and wondered whether the bears are Jewish on account of their last name. Even though not a lot happens I really enjoy this episode, Tori B Bearly on the other hand does not like this episode because invariably every time I watch it I end up screaming ‘Take the Shot‘ at her for days afterwards.
5. Action Girlz Racing
Another episode that introduced me to Game Grumps, and showed me that no matter how bad I am at racing games, and I am terrible, that I won’t be quite as bad as Dan ‘360 No-Scope‘ Avidan. This video was funny for more than the sheer inability of Dan and Arin to control their characters, but also because it’s one of the few games where the roles are reversed and Dan is ‘grumpier’ than Arin.
6. Busy Scissors
Considering not a great lot happens in this episode, I don’t know why I like it so much, maybe because I occasionally just like an episode that’s familiar and good background noise, but mainly I think it just tickles me, it’s not uproariously funny but it’s enjoyable. Plus it’s good to know that sometimes whether they try at a game or not, terrible game design and/or execution will endeavour to screw the Game Grumps over.
7. Domino Rally
So this is a big episode because it was the first one to be fully edited by their, at the time, brand new editor, Kevin Abernathy and thus served as his introduction to the audience or the Lovelies as they are more commonly known. This is another game that the Game Grumps played where after seeing it I wanted to get a copy for myself, no luck so far but I hold out hope. It looks relatively easy once you get a hang of controlling the character, and overall it seems silly and fun and has that same type of quirky humour that made Pepsi Man such a great game.
I’ve really enjoyed all of the Ghoul Grumps / Nightmare Before Xmas episodes, this one in particular was really funny, something about the slow pace, and yet Arin and Dan still panic is just funny to me. It’s also yet another game where I’m left thinking, I really wanna play that. I think the highlight of the game was Arin escaping his room, only to run up and fall through a hole in the floor and be discovered by Granny.
9. Friday The 13th: The Game
Because this was the only video published for Ghoul Grumps 2018 I think I must have missed this when it first aired, I ended up not seeing it until mid 2019, and I’m man enough to admit, late at night, watching this with headphones on, and trying to avoid waking my partner, I ended up spooked at one of the jump scares, and again, I’m getting this game at some point because I saw the Grumps play it. It looks interesting, has the potential to be a lot of fun and it’s based on my second favourite slasher villain.
10. HOW did they publish THIS? **CRAP GAME ALERT**
So this one is brand new, and the game itself, as the kinda clickbaity title above will tell you was not good, although it did have an adorable, if poorly rendered, St. Bernard in it which wins points with me. The funniest parts of this game by far where Arin saying a random guys name was Carl/Karl, only to turn out to be correct at which point he proceeds to lose it, and the pause menu chaos, with them pausing to do a sort of drive time radio scenario. It’s a surprisingly funny video, and is part of their new batch of longer videos which last around 30-40 minutes as opposed to the regular 10-15 minutes.
So that was my Top 10 favourite Game Grumps One-offs during the Dan era of the channel and if you want to check them out for yourself and maybe find some favourites of you own then head on over to YouTube and check out the main channel, Game Grumps, their new channel, The Grumps and their misfit channel for random things, Grump Out.
Make sure and follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest updates from Game Grumps. Also if you’re in the mood for Game Grumps but have no idea what to watch then use this neat little site, RandomGrump, which you can use to find a completely random episode or series from the backlog of Grumps content.
