Before Stories Band Photo

So first of how did you all meet?

Met at a rave in Croatia sharing a line of coke lady and the tramp style – or through a Facebook ad Colin put up looking for someone to make Sad, Triumphant music with. We can’t remember which.

Where are you all from?

Ackergill, Caithness (Jamie) Falkirk (Colin) – based in Aberdeen.

How long have you been playing your respective instruments?

16 years (Jamie) 35 years (Colin).

What genre of music do you consider your work to be?

What are your influences?

La Dispute, Listener, Shellac, Arab Strap.

Do you do covers and if so what’s your go to?

We occasionally play Dead Air by Arab Strap live, we’ve recorded a few covers of songs by Townes Van Zandt, Bloc Party, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and Listener that are on our YouTube channel.

What if anything does your name mean/why are you called that?

I suppose it’s loosely connected with what we do but that’s more coincidence than anything. We are a Before Stories because Jamie didn’t like the name Racist Gran.

Do you have a process for writing your songs? /Which of you writes the songs?

Jamie writes all of the lyrics (with occasional edits from Colin) Colin does most of the beats (with more frequent edits by Jamie) guitar parts are pretty munch 50/50.

What are your rehearsals generally like?

Like a passive aggressive version of the movie Stalingrad.

Do you have any interesting/funny stories about gigging or touring?

Kit breaking, watching other bands prima donna and eating at every Wetherspoons in Scotland.

What song do you remember most from your childhood?

Quiet Things No One Ever Knows – Brand New (Jamie) Sheep – The Housemartins (Colin).

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

Learning the technology we use to play live, we are most of the way there, mostly through brute force and ignorance.

How can fans-to-be gain access to your music?
Videos –
Songs –
Also available on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon Music.

Have you released anything yet/if you have how has it gone down and are you planning anything for the near future?

2 EPS and 4 singles, it’s going ok so far – people are buying and streaming them anyway.

Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

All over Scotland, the Drouthy Cobbler in Elgin is a good place to play, Buff Club in Glasgow wasn’t our favourite but the people there were cool and it wasn’t their fault – we have shows coming up in Aberdeen and Glasgow.

What do you think about downloading music online?

All for it.

What’s your outlook on the record industry today?

What record industry? Apart from Ice Cream for Crow who are the coolest xx.

And let’s end with something a little different…Which famous person, alive or dead, would you have dinner with and why?

We have already done this with Dan, Kris and Jon from Listener – if you count us eating their tortilla chips?
