Ninja Sex Party 'NSFW' Album Artwork

Album Review: Ninja Sex Party – NSFW

Ninja Sex Party are an American comedy duo and band formed of Dan Avidan (one of the two main members of internet show Game Grumps who’s also known by his stage name Danny Sexbang) and Brian Wecht (a PHD level theoretical physicist and keyboard player also known by his stage name Ninja Brian). Ninja Sex Party, sometimes shortened to NSP have been around since 2009 and since that time they’ve released four albums, with a fifth due out in October 2017 and a sixth planned but with no release date scheduled yet. NSP are similar to Lonely Island so if you liked them then there’s every chance you’ll like Ninja Sex Party. NSP perform songs which deal with the love and fantasy lives of the two members, Danny Sexbang who is the singer and is self obsessed and sex obsessed and dresses in an ostentatious unitard and Ninja Brian, a silent and violent man dressed as a ninja and he also plays the keyboard. I’ll be talking about their first album ‘NSFW’ now.

‘Introduction’ serves surprisingly as an introduction to the album and opens with the sultry, soft tones of Dan Avidan in his persona as Danny Sexbang, he asks as to close our eyes and imagine him shirtless riding a horse with the wind blowing through his ‘Jew-fro’ and the entire dialogue is backgrounded by soft calming music. The song also introduces Ninja Brian who’s apparently the horse Danny is riding, and he is glistening with sweat. You get very quickly the notion behind the two characters. And the song is funny and does exactly what the title says.

‘NSP Theme Song’ opens fast and hard…;)…the instrumental sections are well composed and full of energy, a blend of guitar and keyboard and percussion all designed to create something awesome. The lyrics are largely introducing both the characters ‘we are Ninja Sex Party, musically seducing all the hotties, Brian’s a Ninja, Danny’s a hot Jew and we are best friends…Yeah’ it sums up the story very well. That’s a common trend of the album, they largely tell specific stories set to music, I know the same can be said for most songs but while they veil their stories in metaphor and flowery language NSP just kinda plow through…;)…and tell a clear narrative to an epic musical score. They also often take time to talk to each other directly during the songs, another example that sets NSP apart from most bands, in this case Danny accidentally calls Ninja Brian fat then apologises for it rather badly.

‘The Decision’ is perhaps one of my favourites on the album and opens on some tight electronic percussion and synth notes that you just can’t help bouncing along with, the narrative of this story is Danny singing to the audience about the difficult decision for fans on which one of the two members to have sex with, he of course uses the chance to embellish his qualities and put Ninja Brian down to keep him out of the running, something that will be revisited in later tracks. He also mentions that he’s Jewish again in this song, which not something many performers are vocal about. I think my favourite line in this track is “The choice should be so obvious (Dan), And although he is mysterious (Brian) Don’t you want a man who’s tall whose name is Dan…And is Jewish” it’s exactly the type of thing they do, funny and smart lyrics that don’t take themselves too serious. He ends the track by accusing Brian of having an STD and then apologising again.

‘Dinosaur Laser Fight’ is exciting for the name alone but also happens to be a really great song that opens with some synth notes before Dan starts to tell us boys and girls about a ninja science lesson, he asks us to close our eyes and go back in time, he talks about a stegosaurus who wants a high five and a T-Rex who is rightfully annoyed because he can’t reciprocate with his tiny useless dinosaur arms and this apparently prompts a dinosaur laser fight, which is by far the most awesome thing I can think off and apparently it also takes place in space with robots and sharks but we need to shut up and stop questioning it. I like this song, its got a good beat, a good melody and it’s funny, and it’s one of those insidious tracks you find yourself singing the words to a few days later without thinking. Also Albert Einstein invented space? Who knew, this song does what NSP does best constant escalation of madness. And I think that’s the best.

‘Objects of Desire’ starts off with a more romantic mellow beat that serves well with Danny’s voice as he constantly seems to be seducing us with his voice. It’s actually pretty well put together and clever right up till he admits he’s fucked all his roommate’s/girlfriend’s possessions. Still funny though. Its this song in particular that gives the impression that Danny Sexbang is sex obsessed, I mean it’s in his bloody name for godsakes. An even bigger clue though was that he apparently sixty-nined a vacuum cleaner. It’s amazing how he can sing about such crass things and still belt out a tune that you want to listen to, it’s entertaining and enjoyable to listen to as well as being funny. Obviously the other person is annoyed and decides to leave which prompts hands down the best line in the track “I’m glad I got this off my chest, My soul has taken flight. Don’t slam the door on your way out darling, Because I’m slamming it tonight”

‘If We Were Gay’ is another of the best tracks on the album, it’s really faced paced and punchy and I can just about recite it off by heart although that might be because a decent amount of the words are balls. The backing instrumentals to this song are really good and help to build the momentum of the track. This song has Danny talking about how despite living together and wearing spandex they aren’t gay but what would it be like. He repeatedly has Ninja Brian doing the gay acts in these imaginings again using the song as a way to undermine Brian and keep the attention from the ladies away from him. The track on Bandcamp doesn’t contain the funniest part, check the video on YouTube for that, in that Brian finally gets his own back by firing at Danny with not one but two separate poison darts.

‘No Reason Boner’ is very playful and the music backs that up, it tells the story about a problem the sex obsessed Danny has…he cannot control his boner, it just pops up when he least wants or needs it, like the worst Muppet on Sesame Street. It probably says a lot about Danny’s mental age that he has a problem largely relegated to puberty stricken boys. In the narrative of the track he walks us through the different types of erections and some embarrassing circumstances where his pops up to say hello without an invitation. Also you can hear Brian speak briefly in this track, although as a Postal Worker and a Zoo Keeper rather than in his Ninja Brian persona.

‘Puppies in Space’ was a track that I sincerely hoped didn’t have any sexual overtones and thankfully there was none. Instead this track was an epic and brief musical interlude where Danny literally just says loudly and melodically several times the phrase ‘Puppies in Space’ before anticlimactically saying ‘They can’t survive’ at the end.

‘Sex Training’ Now this track I’m more than happy to have sexual overtones, it’s a little rude as to be expected and has Danny preparing you to use your dong properly, not that he really knows how. It’s all just a ruse so that he can have sex with your girlfriend instead. You apparently end the track as a dick master, and he’s plowed your girlfriend…so yay!

‘Manticore’ really reminds me of something that Jack Black would have written and tells the story of the mythical Manticore in a very epic and glam band fashion. Remember the Manticore, he makes a reappearance on another album. Most of the song is quite fast paced and heavy but it has a softer more melodic part towards the end. Largely the song is talking about how awesome the Manticore is and how he’d kick your ass and steal your girl. Great not only do I have Danny to worry about but also an ancient Greek monster as well.

‘You Can Do Us!’ opens with drums and a nice little piano fusion that serves to back up a really good song with a great melody and it also happens to be about how we, as fans, well probably just the ladies can have sex with Danny and Ninja Brian if you want. Also we learn that Danny has a sex hat, or did he mean condom, I’m no use with double entendre. But yeah this song is another one of those that despite the material being a little bit silly, it’s really catchy and it’s not just a funny song it’s something you’d like to listen to because it sounds nice.

‘I Just Want to (Dance)’ has a very classic piano intro, sounds like something that Elton John would sing, although he was talking about tiny little dancers. This song surprisingly is about how Danny just wants to dance, the keyboard sections of this are upbeat and do the song really well especially when they contrast with the classic piano parts. You get the feeling that dancing is just a euphemism for sex again but then again you get the feeling by the end of the album that everything is for him.

‘Three Minutes of Ecstasy’ wow only three minutes huh? Stud. Jokes aside though this is another really good song, Danny has a very good song and he knows his vocal range really well. It’s good that they don’t sacrifice humour for style and musical skill or the other way around, they manage to find a balance between a nice sounding song and something that’s funny. As you probably guessed this is another long brag/request for sex, but still a good little song.

‘Accept My Shaft’ has an electric jazz intro, fighting for a seductive man like Dan who also dressed like a cyber pimp. The song itself follows that same kinda jazzy beat, and it’s all about Dan propositioning the listener to ‘Accept his Shaft’, he spends a lot of time talking about his erection. I feel I know it very well by the end of this album and you will to assuming you listen to it, or read this entire review.

‘Outroduction’ tells you to open your eyes, because you were meant to be imagining all that and shame on you if you were multitasking because an epic like this needs to be heard properly. He also references Ninja Brian’s multiple instrumental parts throughout the album by saying “I’m particularly impressed by the way you’re simultaneously playing piano, pan flute, maracas and a gong next to me right now” which is about as nice a thing as he’s said to Ninja Brian throughout the album. The entire part is backed by the same calming music that scored the introduction.

So those are my thoughts on the debut album ‘NSFW’ by the band Ninja Sex party and if you want to get your own copy then you can buy it here on Bandcamp and if you want to keep up with the latest from NSP then check them out on Facebook, Twitter and on their personal website.
