Lou McLean is a singer/songwriter based in Edinburgh who started her musical career as a graduate of the Girl’s Rock School in Edinburgh. She released her debut EP in 2016 and has since toured the UK and spent time writing new songs. If you want to find out a little more about Lou McLean then check out this interview I did with her. Today I’ll be reviewing her EP ‘Good Morning Easter Road’ which was released on the 9th June 2017.
‘Empty Cans’ opens on a fast paced little guitar sequence before we hear Lou McLean and her lovely Scottish twang. This track is playful and yet melancholic and it’s rare to hear a good old Scottish accent, and when you do it’s usually buried by the music or the much of a mumble but Lou lets us know that you can sound beautiful, clear and still undeniably Scottish. I listened to this track a few times just because as good as it is first listen you like it even more with repeated listens.
‘Bedtime Reading’ would be amazing at a live venue, and again it balances the funny and the mundane in perfect balance, you get the feeling she could read the phone-book and make it charming. I think this track was my favourite, it was so well put together and honest that I feel you couldn’t help but enjoy it.
‘Play Dead’ opens to vocals, backed up by a gentle guitar thrum, She has the way of telling a narrative with her songs that is surprisingly rare for an artist, some songs connect with you emotionally and others have complex and smart lyrics but you can do either of them and still avoid telling a story with your song but McLean manages to do all of it.
‘Green Shirt, Blue Eyes’ is another charming episode in the live of the singer and you kinda get caught up in the way she tells you her story, not only does she have a strong voice that stands up to scrutiny but she can pull off a fast paced song with ease.
‘Poets & Flat Caps’ is the final track it’s shines a poignant and sharp light on some complicated issues and does so in what I’ve gathered is her lovely and charming and occasionally fragile style.
So that’s what I thought of Lou McLean’s EP ‘Good Morning Easter Road’ and if you want to check that out then head on over to Bandcamp. Make sure and support Lou McLean by following her on Facebook and Twitter.
