As someone who hates queuing and feels anxious in crowds I like anything that limits my interaction with the heaving masses and as a poor student type I like the cheap and often tasty food offered at any number of Wetherspoons establishments up and down the country. Finally those two things have come together. No more do you need to crowd round a bar to order food, all you need to do is connect to the free WiFi offered at Wetherspoons (c’mon they’re making it too easy) and either download or open the Wetherspoons app (if you already have it downloaded) and you can order your entire meal from the safety and comfort of whatever table you choose to sit at.
I think that more restaurants should offer something like this, and as much as I love Wetherspoons I think it’s weird that they’re at the forefront of this. Like I said if you have anxiety or don’t appreciate crowds then this app is a godsend. Just pick what you want, select your table number and you can have everything just brought to you. It’s by no means perfect, it does need internet to function, it sometimes stores meals ordered previously and if you don’t notice you could end up order more than you meant to and it doesn’t have a notes section so you can’t put preferences or request i.e don’t put ice in the drinks, or substitute the barbecue sauce for spicy tomato.
But overall I think the good far outweighs the bad, and it significantly improves my dining experience if no one needs to go up to the bar, you just pick, click and wait. So I’d give it a 3.5/5 for convenience and innovation and hopefully they can make a few minor improvements which I’m sure will kick it up to a 5/5. If you want to get the app for yourself then follow the links below for whatever device you have.
